John Austin Collett was born 31 March 1908 in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1929. Lieutenant Commander Collett was killed in action during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 26 October 1942, while commanding Torpedo Squadron 10 (VT-10) in Enterprise (CV-6).

Namesake

In 1944, the destroyer USS Collett (DD-730) was named in his honor. Her first captain was Commander James D. Collett, brother of Lt.Cmdr. Collett.
